Scallop Design Co. sources as many materials as possible from small businesses that share our love for the ocean. Most pieces feature two standout materials: pearls and abalone (Pāua).

The Problem with Abalone Jewelry

Many abalone species are under threat, with some listed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Unsustainable harvest methods and rising demand have caused wild populations to plummet—global wild abalone production has dropped over 70% since the 1970s. While abalone’s beauty makes it highly sought after for jewelry, much of it is sourced irresponsibly from stressed populations. This harms species, damages ecosystems, and erodes the traditions of communities that have harvested abalone sustainably for generations.

Our Solution to Abalone Jewelry

We source 100% of our abalone (Pāua) directly from New Zealand through Luméa, a leader in natural, eco-ethical shell materials. They partner with sustainably managed New Zealand and Australian fisheries that enforce strict harvest limits, rotate harvest areas, and run repopulation programs to support abalone recovery.

Luméa also upholds traditional practices—abalone is often harvested by local freedivers who draw on indigenous knowledge and deep respect for the ocean. Their shells are sustainably sourced, carefully processed, and rooted in cultural and ecological stewardship, making Luméa a truly conscientious partner for our jewelry.
